8 Activities to Enjoy This Winter in Bismarck-Mandan
January 29, 2024
It’s no secret that North Dakota winters are just different. From November until March, we find ourselves living in a sparkly, snow-covered haven that’s just begging residents and visitors to get outside and enjoy themselves. In the Bismarck-Mandan area, you’ll find a variety of thrilling outdoor adventures, cozy indoor activities, and everything in between. Here are some of the best winter activities we have to offer.
Ice Fishing
As soon as the lakes freeze over, ice fishing season begins. The Missouri River flows through Bismarck and becomes a hub for anglers looking to catch walleye, northern pike, trout, and more. The ice typically gets thick enough in the bends and bays of the river to support fishing shelters and is a great place for beginner and experienced fishermen to set up for the day. Learn more about access points, regulations, and more on the North Dakota Game & Fish website.
Skiing and Snowshoeing
No matter what type of skiing you’re craving, there is a place for you. If it’s cross-country skiing you want, the Riverwood Golf Course transforms its 150-acre, 18-hole course into a cross-country skiing haven in the winter months. You’ll find miles of well-maintained trails, scenic landscapes, and, of course, ski and snowshoe rentals.
If it’s downhill skiing you’re looking for, Huff Hills offers a 450-foot drop, 16 runs, 3 lifts, a beginner’s area, challenging runs, and lessons if you need them. Equipment rentals are available.
Sledding and Tubing
A family favorite in the Bismarck area is the Tom O’Leary Sledding Hill. Grab your favorite downhill vessel, bundle up, and zip down the hill. Though there is a warming house, there is no one from the Parks and Recreation District on site, so it’s important that you use extreme caution on the hills.
Ice Skating (Indoors and Outdoors)
Whether you’re looking to strap on your first pair of ice skates, practice your axel jump, or lace ‘em up for some pick-up hockey, there are plenty of rinks to choose from. Find an indoor rink at the Capital Ice Complex or the VFW Sports Center, and outdoor rinks at parks around the city. Most offer skate rentals.
Indoor Pools
Swimming? In the winter? In North Dakota? YES! You’ll find a variety of indoor pools and water activities around the city, including the BSC Aquatic and Wellness Center. Swim lessons, open swim, lap swim, and our favorite - Wibits Water Toys - can bring a little taste of summer time.
Bismarck Bobcats
A Bismarck Bobcats game is the perfect way to add some high-energy competition to your winter. The team is part of the North American Hockey League, the only USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier II Junior league for student athletes ages 16-20 with aspirations to play at a collegiate or professional level. The season runs from September through April.
The Polar Trap
Dining outdoors isn’t exactly practical in the middle of a North Dakota winter. Or is it? The Polar Trap sets up diners and drinkers at The Paddle Trap in their very own heated igloo along the banks of the Missouri River. There is a $10 reservation fee and you must reserve your igloo ahead of time.
Send It!
Bring your favorite summertime backyard activity indoors for the winter at Send It!, Bismarck-Mandan’s first and only indoor cornhole arena. You’ll also find ax throwing, darts, and a full-service bar.
